The Chief Justice, Sir Michael Myers, who has been presiding over sittings of the Supreme Court in Auckland for the past fortnight, returned to Wellington yesterday.

Mr. Edmund S. Paul; chairman of directors of the Australian Provincial Assurance Association, Ltd., arrived in New Zealand from London on Friday, and will be leaving for Sydney by -the Wanganella on Friday.

Mr. George Bruce Smith, general manager of the Australian Provincial Assurance Association, Ltd.* is.visiting New Zealand. He left for Auckland today and intends returning to • Sydney on Friday by the Wanganella.

The funeral of the late Mr. Richard. W. Jansson, of the maintenance staff of the Post and. Telegraph Department, took place at the South African War Veterans' plot, Karori, on Saturday afternoon. Many fellowemployees and friends of the deceased attended, also representatives of the Wellington South African War Veterans' Association. The pall-bearers were Messrs. G. Woods, J. Lawlor, J. Crowley, H. M. McFarlane, T. O'Sullivan, and W. J. Coventry. Captain J. J. Clark, president, : Mr. Paul Peters, secretary, and Messrs. B. C. Cull, W. T. C. Wortley, and J. W. Brewer represented .the executive committee of the South African War Veterans' Association. The casket was draped with the Union Jack and.the South African Association's" flag. The Rev. Father Breen officiated at-the graveside, and at the conclusion*of the ceremony, a touching tribute was paid by the ex-service comrades of the deceased filing past, and depositing a South African daisy in the grave. The late Mr. Jansson served as a trooper with the Provincial Mounted Rifles in the South African campaign,. and remained in that country for about 12 years. He afterwards came to' New Zealand and joined up with the maintenance branch of the Post and, Telegraph Department, where he. had 21 years' service. He is survived by a widow.

Mr. Stanley Oliver, conductor of the Royal Wellington Choral Union; and Mrs. Oliver, will leave Wellington: on December 17 for Sydney- to spend a holiday in Australia, including a visit to Melbourne. They propose returning to Wellington in January. :

Senior^Sergeant M. Gaffney, who has retired after nearly forty years'' ser-. vice in the New Zealand Police Force, was farewelled by his - colleagues on Friday afternoon. On behalf of "the officers and men of the Wellington Central station, Superintendent A: T. Emerson presented him with a solid leather travelling case suitably* equipped, and a gold watch chain. Speakers who testified to the respect and esteem in which Mr. Gaffney rhad been held during his twenty years' service in the Wellington district office included Inspector G. B. Edwards, SubInspector J. Carroll (detective branch). Inspector J. Cummings (Commissioner's staff), Sub-Inspector C. E. Roach, Senior-Sergeant J. Dempseyj- Sergeant D. Beard (district office), Sergeant J. W. McHolm (Hutt Valley), Mr. R. F. Madden (Commissioner's secretary), and Constables W. G. Bennett,' A. Johnston, and T. F. Smith. Senior-Ser-geant GaSney was the senior'man in his rank, at the time of his retirement, and for the past five years has been in charge of the police store: His service included a term -in the New Zealand Permanent Artillery.: ;.
