WELL VENTILATED
NEW CUBA STREET SHOP
Messrs. J. K. McKenzie, Ltd.'s, new shop in Cuba Street, besides being fitted on the lines of all the firm's premises, has as its main feature the latest ventilating and heating system for the convenience and comfort of patrons and the staff. The ventilating of the building is important owing to its crowded condition at rush hours, but the installation in this case is designed to give a diffused current Of pure air, not at all in the nature of a draught. This is achieved by a 4ft 6in fan at the rear of the building, which operates through a duct into and through the • premises. The fan is operated electrically, but for the first time in Wellington electricity and gas have been combined in a cooling or heating system. In the summer the current of air is cool, while in the winter the air which comes in through a series of deflectors high in the wall is warmed. In summer or winter the powerful ejector fan clears used air from the 30ft by 136 ft premises every four minutes. Earthquake safeguards have not been overlooked in the remodelling of the building, the number of columns making for greater safety. A feature that will be greatly appreciated is a commodious rest room for women patrons. Mirrors have been made plentiful use of throughout the fitting of this new shop, and they give a stereoscopic effect which greatly enhances the appearance of many departments. As is usual in the McKenzie shops, patrons have ample space to move about the counters, glass shelving is used, and the lay-out is such that each department is readily reached, and may, indeed, be picked out immediately on entering. The electric lighting day and night is brilliant and effective.
