SPEEDWAY RIDING
PRACTICE COMMENCED
PROMISING FORM
Some twelve riders took advantage of the opening of the track at the Kilbirnie Stadium last Wednesday to get in their initial ( practice for the coming season. Among them' were Phillips, McLeod, Naylor, Corneal, Appleyard, and Young, all prominent figures in local competition last year, and Toiley, from Palmerston North, who represented New Zealand in the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy race two seasons ago. Although the track was rather slow, the form shown in the preliminary practice was sufficiently encouraging to lend the belief that some very fine sport will be seen in Wellington when the overseas men arrive early next month. J. Hobson, the Christchurch rider, who has returned from England after a season with Wembley, speaks very highly of W. Kilmister, the Wellington star, with whom he was associated. Kilmister had shown outstanding form in Britain. Hobson, who linked forces with the Australian, R. Case, and quickly established himself at Home, also stated that the English team now en route for New Zealand was a particularly strong one, and if the members of it reproduced their top form, something sensational in the way of performance could be expected. IMPRESSIVE DEBUT. The two American cracks, J. Milne and C. Milne, who passed through Wellington recently under engagement to Australian speedway companies, and who, it is hoped, will appear in the Dominion later in the season, made a very impressive debut in Sydney. They arrived in the morning, and in the evening, without any acquaintance whatever with the track, J. Milne succeeded in equalling the lap record of 10 4-ssec, and also defeated two record holders in F. Pearce and C. Mitchell in the final of the chief event on the programme. Both Pearce and Mitchell are well-known in New Zealand, the former-still holding with Kilmister the four-lap record at the Kilbirnie Stadium.
