WOMEN'S CRICKET
T.O.G. LEADING
NOTES AND COMMENT
• The first round of the Wellington Ladies' Cricket-Association's senior championship ended last Saturday, when, under perfect summer conditions, Technical Old Girls defeated College Old Girls in an exciting game. Wesley went under to Y.W.C.A. by a good margin. This match was more interesting than the scores (95 to 35) indicate, Wesley being a much-im-proved team and capable of winning a higher place in the second round. . The senior championship table is as follows:— • ■ Played. Won. Lost. Pts. Tech. Old Girls ..S3 — 6 Coll. Old Uirls 3 2 1 4 Y.W.C.A 3 1 2 1 Wesley 3 — 3 — To make the senior championship more interesting the Association has promoted two teams to senior status, namely Woolworths and Karori. Woolworths have an excellent record. They won the junior championship last season and have performed consistently well this season. With such players as N. Chandler, V. Taylor, N. McNichol, and N. Simmons, this team should more than hold its own in the higher I division. . ~ Karori are also rich in promising players. They played senior last year and put up some great fights. Mrs. Fuller is a tower of strength to her side and is a great defensive bat, while the Misses Sutton and Shotter will be in their right places as seniors. The College Old Girls-T.O.G. match promised to be a hard tussle,.and so it proved. The fielding of both teams was very smart indeed and snappy returns kept both sides on their toes. In this game Joan Hatcher, a sister to Dot, made her debut and saved College Old Girls many runs by her excellent display in the outfield. J. Aitkin is maintaining her high standard and some of her leg shots on Saturday were delightful to watch. H. Buck, after a narrow escape early in her innings, settled down and made a faultless 36. B. Holmes again showed improving footwork and made 17. Jean Mack made 14, despite the fact that she has not conquered that habit of turning her back to the ball. Technicals audacity, combined with smart backing up, undoubtedly won them the game. They are to be congratulated as a team, for they really settle down to it in a businesslike way. Nan Sheridan, kept up her average by capturing seven wickets. The "hat trick" was a notable feature of her performance. Dot Hatcher. (C.0.G.) maintained a steady length and was rewarded with five for 32, while I. Pickering accounted for the rest, finishing up with five for 36. Wesley, a much-improved team, met Y.W.C.A. at Emmerson Street. They have a really good bowler in M. Thomson, who kept the Y.W.C.A. batsmen on their guard all the time. Wesley missed the services of their fast bowler, M. Smith, who is a great asset to her side. These two, together with Misses Gandy and Norton, form a splendid attack. V. Mumm was the most successful of the batsmen, scoring 13 before being bowled by Z. Hardie. , It took a Y.W.C.A. junior .(on promotion, as J. Henberg and B. Nash were competing at inter-house sports) to make top score. This was M. Woods, who is to be congratulated on her display. Her driving was a feature of the innings. : D. Simons made 20, scoring most of her funs from leg balls, but was finally trapped by Miss Norton. E. Page also made her debut.among the seniors and fitted in well with the company, fielding very capably. JUNIOR ITEMS. Owing to the inter-house sports the Woolworths-Y.W.C.A. match was postponed. The Trinity v. Y.W.C.A. game was very interesting. The juniors are showing a definite improvement. Trinity have .two good batsman in I. Barley, who unfortunately hit her own wicket when she had hit up 18. It took P. McGlinchy, Y.W.C.A.'s most successful bowler, to dismiss Ransby (20), who batted freely. P. McGlinchy took seven wickets for 27 and bowled consistently. R. Murphy (Y.W.C.A.) performed very well as wicketkeeper. She is also a very steady bat. E. Diak in scoring 12 made top score for Y.W.C.A. and is another improving player. E. McClellan did excellently in bowling for Trinity and narrowly missed the "hat trick." She finished up with five wickets for 10 runs. The Technical Old Girls team has a galaxy of young players who show promise as batsmen. E. Marshall (33) and R. Guthrie (44) batted in steady style. College Old Girls juniors, with a little more coaching, will also do better.
