SOUTHLAND'S NEW STARTER
. One of the most-discussed men at the recent Southland Racing Club's Meeting was the club's caretaker, Mr. T. Marshall, who was undergoing his first serious test as starter, says a southern writer. He had previously acted in that capacity at Otautau Meetings, but little was known of his work there.
At Invercargill Mr. Marshall effected fine dispatches in the first two races and achieved a reasonable measure of success with a big field of green horses in the Trial Handicap. For the rest of the day his work was more than satisfactory, and altogether he made a very favourable impression. He adopted the method of requiring all horses to stand fiat-footed, and the riders, realising this, gave him full assistance.
