A MAORI EFFORT

ANNUAL SALE OF WORK

A real Maori welcome was given to her Excellency Lady Galway when she arrived at the Sydney Street. Hall to operi the annual sale of work arranged; by a group of Maori workers. A dano= and song of welcome were given by Mrs. and Miss Heketa, Misses Wallads.Mrs. Katene, Miss Walker, and Miss Hakarairi. Lady Galway was accompanied by her soi:; the Hon. Simon MoncktonArundel, and Mrs. Purvis, and "was met by; the Bishop of Wellington and Mrs. Sjffott, and the Rev. Mri Temuera.'Laily Pomare arid Mrs. H. D. Bennett mist the party when they arrived on the stage, and her Excellency was presented with a Maori basket (the work of Mrs. Heketa) filled with a charming group of native flowers, including; red manuka, clematis, hinau, hoherist, kowhai, 'and.'others,' arranged by Mrsj Bennett. Tea was served for her Excellency and party in an adjoining room which had spocial Maori decorations.

A poi dance was given by some of the girls, who also gave several during the evening very successfully.

The decorations of the hall were all in charucter, and looked very gay with many colours used, and some specially good native work was obtainable at the Maori and Rarotongan stalls. ,

Wallace, Mrs. Argus.1- Cool drinks stall: Mrs. E. Harfoot Mrs. Q. Vidulich. Fancy stall: Mrs. B. Tarrant, Mrs. B. Otton. Sweets stall: Mrs. Park, Mrs. Shepherd, Mrs. Booth, :.VTrs. P. Jones. Cakes stall: Mrs. B. Hammond, Mrs. Elba, Mrs. Pelham, Mrs. Smith. Flower stall: Mrs. Cameron, I/trs. Potiki. Mr. F. B. Katene was the honorary secretary of the sale.
