GENERAL ELECTION
BIG VOTE LIKELY
RESULTS TONIGHT
'__, With fine weather for polling day, ■i. there is every indication of a big '-<- poll being recorded in the General Election so far as Wellington is con- »" cerned. The polling booths opened 1 at 9 o'clock this morning, and from ■ then on there was a steady flow of '■'■ voters, booth clerks being kept ;' busily engaged. Early voters this ~ morning were mostly women, but to- ■? wards midday both sexes were repre- " sented at all booths. Electors - appeared to be taking the advice of *" the Chief Electoral Officer (Mr. G. G. -, Hodgkins) to vote early. This afterv noon practically all polling booths " were crowded. '„ Polling will close at 7 o'clock this
n. evening and an immediate start will -r be made on the counting of votes. So »>l far as the Wellington seats are concerned, it is expected that the final re'l suits will be known between 8.30 and '', 9 o'clock, and results in other city ; seats should be in shortly afterwards. . Mr. Hodgkins anticipates that all the -■ Dominion finals will be through short- -. ly after 11 o'clock. Progress returns «. of voting on the licensing issue will also be available throughout the even-
Some uncertainty appeared to exist .' today regarding the rights of absentee V voters. The position is that those '" electors who are unable to be in their own electorates on election day are ' entitled, to vote at any polling booth. ■• Their votes will not be counted this - evening, but will be included in the .: totals when the official recount takes place.
