CONTEST TOO EXPENSIVE
MR, FAIREY'S PROTEST

LONDON, November 26.
Announcing that he has withdrawn his challenge for the America Cup 1936, Mr. C. R. Fairey has protested against the attitude to the contest adopted by the Americans.
"The race has now been reduced to a contest between expensive yachts which only syndicates normally can ;iflord," he said. "American entries are all syndicated, whereas British yachts are privately entered. If the American attitude is to remain unmodified it is difficult to see how any private owner will be able to afford to fompcte. I challenged with a 100-ton yacht because I feel that the race would be more sporting if less expensive boats could be entered. The New York Yacht Club told my representative that my challenge is unacceptable and unorthodox, and I have therefore withdrawn and left the field to Mr. Sopwith, if he wishes to challenge."
