SHY DEFEATS'" CONVERSION
' • Trentham stables collected the two 'dividends in the Maiden Race, Shy and ■ Conversion drawing right away from, .the others over the concluding stages.! Shy put up a creditable performance • to win, for he drew No., 14 and was "always out on the track. P. Burgess soon had him running alongside Golden 'Chest following Hippolyta and Con- '' version, but he moved him up fast to ■ he next after Conversion- into the . .straight, and a brief struggle: found ■ him holding the mastery a furlong ' from home, his success being achieved ■ " by a good length. It was only the third race that Shy ** 'has had, but he has been doing well ' for some time on the track and he , finished brilliantly at Masterton . into fourth place. He is a four-year-old • chestnut horse by Valkyrian from the \....Limond —Tivoli mare Stage Fright, and he was bred by Mr. S. G. Holmes, ot " Canterbury, from whom the Trentham 'trainer R. W. A. Lewis, the owner of '■■■Billy Boy, acquired him febout two , ■ years ago. Like so many of the Val--kyrians he has taken time to -build up, but the patience promises to be „ well< rewarded, for he looked a cut . above, his opponents on Saturday. Conversion, "who has previously shown.the possession of speed, went his soundest race to date. He also drew wide, but was.soon racing alongside the leader (Hippolyta) and took charge on the turn, fighting on well when challenged-by his. victor to finish four lengths ahead of the rest 01 the field. He is owneccby Mr. H. F. Wood, part-owner ..of Autopay. The favourite Golden Chest was always well up and looked certain for third till Middle came through fast from several places back to cut him out of that share of the stake on the , post. Middle did not begin very fast, but after that he ran a solid race 'and should soon be a winner. The •best of the others were Sunder. Ruen- "-. zori. Merry Night, Frugal, and Golden . Enterprise. Hippolyta stopped qiiick---ly; : and so did Meritor, in the ■ first .dozen or so strides, after jumping out "-clear and apparently being checked ■ ,by his rider. . / ■; . .
