WOMEN & TEMPERANCE
CENTRAL BRANCH MEETS
There was a good attendance at the annual meeting of the Wellington Central branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union held at the Y.W.C.A. on Wednesday.
The correspondence included a letter from the New Zealand executive recommending a day of prayer for the licensing poll, and a letter from the "White Ribbon" editor asking members to do temperance educative work in the vacation. It was stated that a prayer meeting would be held for the abolition of the liquor traffic at the Constable Street rooms on polling day at 3 p.m.
The annual report showed that good work had been done in connection with the Cradle Roll. Willing helpers had come forward to visit at the Hospital, and many magazines had been taken and flowers and dainties distributed. The members had been helped to think internationally by having the League of Nations Union's work reported. The union, it was stated, was able to work to assist to remove the disadvantages of women and children by having a representative on the National Council of Women. A representative was also on the Bible in State Schools League, and the union had been represented on a deputation to the Presbyterian Assembly. The work done and subjects discussed during the year had been chosen with the aim of helping members to work towards making their country a better one for children and young people to grow up in. Delightful songs, music, and recitations had been given at the meetings.
Mrs. Andrew was the soloist. Mrs. Hoult and her helpers served afternoon tea. A special vote of thanks was passed to Mrs. HouU for the manner in which she had manaeed the silver jubilee afternoon tea, and for her generous gift of the birthday cake.
