STRONG PROTEST
CLOSING OF SHOPS
NELSON OPPOSITION
(Special to the "Evening Post.")
NELSON, November 21,
Strong indignation against the compulsory closing of shops on the afternoon of Election Day was expressed at a well-attended meeting of the Nelson Soft Goods and Boot Retailers' Association today. Some members went so far as to suggest that the law should be defied and the shops kept open on this occasion with the object of drawing public attention to the injustice.
"It was felt that the protest was particularly justified in view of the fact that for many years representations have been made to the Government by the New Zealand Federation of Drapers and Associated Chambers of Commerce without result, in spite of repeated promises, for consideration.
After a full discussion, in which strong indignation was expressed, the following resolution was unanimously carried: "That this meeting strongly protests to the Government against the compulsory closing of shops on the afternoon of Election Day, and urges that the Government gives attention to the amendment of the Electoral Act on the lines submitted by the New Zealand Federation of Drapers and Boot Retailers, and the Associated Chambers of Commerce."
It was further resolved that letters be sent to the Nelson Parliamentary candidates asking for their support, if elected, of the desired amendment to tho Electoral Act, and in addition that a letter of protest be sent to the Rt. Hon. the Prime Minister requesting him to give an assurance that consideration will be given to this matter during the coming year.
It is recognised by retailers generally that the law permits the opening of shops on Saturday afternoon In election week to make up for the lost half-day, but the fact that people arc not accustomed to shop on a Saturday afternoon in those towns (the majority) where the Saturday half-holiday is observed, makes that provision practically worthless:
It was further resolved that late night in election week be held as usual on the Friday, and that the premises of members should close at the usual time (12.30 p.m.) on Saturday.
