ENGINEERS' DISPUTE
TERMS OF AGREEMENT Almost complete agreement was reached ia conciliation council today when the- hearing was concluded of the application by the New Zealand Federated Ironmasters' Industrial Association of Employees for an award covering nearly all workers in the engineering industry of the Dominion. with the exception of boilermakers. Mr! P. Hally (Conciliation Commissioner) presided.
The council came to an agreement on all clauses except the overtime rate, the rate of wages for machine moulders, and metal workers' assistants, and conditions of employment of youths. The wages agreed to were 2s 2d an hour for pattern makers, 2s Id for tool makers, 2s for first-grade engineers and moulders, and Is lOd for second-grade engineers. Rates for female workers: 15s a week for the first year, 20s for the second, 25s for the third, 30s for the fourth, 35s for the fifth, and 42s thereafter, with a proviso that all female workers receiving more than those rates should not have their rates reduced.
The hours of work were agreed upon at 44 a week, eight hours to be worked on five days of the week and four on Saturday. Where shift workers are employed 2s 6d a shift extra will be paid to evening and night shift workers. i The rest of the conditions were agreed to largely in the terms of the award that was in force in 1932.
The council adjourned until early in December to allow the parties to consider further the matters on which agreement was not reached.
