POSTMAN'S LAPSE
"This is a lamentable case," remarked the Bournemouth Recorder, Mr. J. Lhind Pra'U/to John Fox, aged 58, postman, of Bournemouth, when he pleaded guilty to stealing fifteen letters, containing £4 10s, in the course of his employment. Hitherto of excellent character, Fox, who was in receipt of £3 2s a week, was within fifteen months of retiring on pension. "Your offence, quite apart from any sentence of the Court, has brought severe punishment upon you," the Recorder told Fox. "Your character is gone, your emploj'ment is gone, and you have lost that pension to which you would have become entitled. It is only because of these exceptional matters that I am able to pass the lenient 'sentence of six months' imprisonment in the second division."
