KINNOULL AND PINK COAT

Neither Kinnoull nor his sire (Pink Coat) will receive, from those who may in years to come study their records, the full measure of credit for his three-year-old form, says the Christchurch writer "Argus." Pink Coat, after being a good two-year-old, ran only three times at three years. Weighted at 9.6, he won the Spring Handicap at Ashburton in September, after which he went to Auckland, where Eaglet beat him in the Great Northern Guineas. Next he visited Trentham, where he had an easy win in the Harcourt Cup, Eaglet being among the unplaced lot. Unfortunately he .broke down in the race, and so was deprived of his chance to gain Derby honours.

His son, Kinnoull, who emulated his sire as a two-year-old by winning the Canterbury Champagne Stakes, missed the distinction that attaches to the Derby winner only through bad luck. His rider allowed the colt to be shut in after reaching the straight, and a delayed run saw him narrowly beaten into fourth place. That he was unplaced is what the records will show, but there will be few ready to argue that he was not the outstanding three-year-old of this spring. Two days after the Derby, he outclassed Heritage, the only one of his own age to oppose him in the Canterbury Cup, and if the Derby could be run again Kinnoull would be a hotter favourite than ever. It is to be hoped that nothing will ococur to prevent him later on from demonstrating how good he is.
