CARD PARTIES

Another pleasant card tournament was held last evening at the headquarters of the Kilbirnie, Lyall Bay, and Melrose Auxiliary Committee, W.R.S.A., 15 Bay Road, Kilbirnie.

Mrs. M. Leathwick and Mr. C. H. Knowles were the winners of the bridge prizes, and Mrs. S. Stewart and Mr. L. H. Hooker won the prizes for "500."

Mr. D. Gunn, chairman of the local auxiliary, thanked the card players for their continued support, and referred to a special gift stall in aid of the Health Stamp Campaign which the ladies' committee proposed to run during the next card tournament. The president of the ' ladies' committee, Mrs. H. Q. Bruce, stated that gifts would be very welcome, and hoped that as many as possible would bring some article along with them.

At a card afternoon arranged during the week by the ladies' "committee Mrs. E. Thomson was the successful player.

Last evening, in the rooms of fhe Wellington Operatic Society, a large and enthusiastic gathering of members and friends were entertained by a reading of J. Hastings Turner's wellknown play "The Scarlet Lady." The various parts were taken as follows: — "Alicia Crane" by Hilda Webster; "Peggy Winton" by Gwyn Jones; "Mrs. Henry Wetherby" by Dorothea Casey; "Lady Hipcomb" by Mrs. Rosina Sims; "Mrs. Price" by Mrs. Violet Webster; "Violet" by Ivy Power; "Reginald Gill" by Percy Bertram; "Peter Crane" by Clem Hill; "Rev. John Price" by Cecil Sims, and "Badcock" by George Power. Alter the reading, supper was served.
