SOME RECENT MEETINGS

Wellington District Lodge.—Bro. R. J. Mathers, D.D.G.M., presided over a good attendance. Accounts totalling £90 7s 2d were passed. Nine members of subordinate lodges were advanced to the First Degree by the District Degree Master, Bro. F. Phillips. Permission was given to a lodge to make a district appeal on behalf of a member. Reports were received on official visits during October, medical fund, membership progress and awards, and unemployed members' fund. It was decided to hold usual ritual competitions during the current term, and to circulate lodges regarding date and location of annual picnic. Information was received that the Grand Sire of Australasia, Bro. A. A. Watson, Sydney, arrives on November 29, on a tour of the Dominion. Southern Cross Lodge.—Bro. W. Wrightson, N.G., presided over a good attendance. Accounts totalling £33 6s 8d were passed. Seven members were reported to be on the sick list, and sick visitors' reports 'were received. One member was accepted on transfer. An invitation to Zealandia Lodge was accepted, the occasion to be made an official visit. Reports were received regarding recent social affairs, including the annual Christmas party. Bro. E. Miller reuorted on a recent match for the U.F.S. Council "500" Shield, and Bro. F. Dales reported on a visit to Levin Lodge. Bro. G. F. Rudkin, Grand Warden, reported on the institution of Beaver Rebekah Lodge, Blenheim, and a visit to Welcome Rebekah Lodge, Nelson. He was accorded congratulations on his election by the Grand Lodge of New Zealand and to the Grand Lodge of Australasia. Wildey Lodge (Island Bay)—Bro. J. Pagani, N.G.. presided over a lai-ge attendance. The D.D.G.M. (Bro. R. J. Mathers), accompanied by the Grand Warden (Bro. G. F. Rudkin), Grand Chaplain (Bro. F. J. Jones), and officers of District Lodge installed the following officers for the current term: Bro. J. Pagani, N.G.. retaining his position till the installation of Bro. H. E. Campin, V.G., absent on leave; J. Innis, V.G.; G. Hogan, recording secretary; C. H. Havill, financial secre-. tray; W. J. Thompson, Warden; A. J. Holding, Conductor; W. S. Brown, R.S.N.G.; W. R. Kelly, L.S.N.G.; B. Churchill, R.S.V.G.; W. Barrowman, L.S.V.G.; W. Bayley, R.S.S.; J. H. Pagani, L.S.S.;.E. Manley, 1.G.; and T. Megann, O.G. On behalf of the lodge the Grand Warden presented Bro. B. Churchill with a past grand's collar. Rose of Wellington Rebekah Lodge. —Sister M. Flaws, N.G., presided over a large attendance. One candidate was nominated. Quarterly accounts and statements were, approved. On behalf of the lodge Sister M. Sergent, L.D.D.G.M., presented Sister E. Collins with a past noble grand's collar. Bro. R. J. Mathers, D.D.G.M., presented Sister N. Collins with the ritual jewel, and Sister L. G. Hope with membership badge won in the recent competitions conducted by District Lodge. The evening was concluded with a card competition against Loyal William Bain Lodge, G.U.0.0.F. Ngati-toa Lodge (Porirua). —Bro. T. Hardie, N.G., presided over a good attendance. Accounts totalling £22 17s 4d were passed. Two candidates were nominated, - and general business disposed of. The remainder of the evening was devoted to further progress in the lodge billiards tournament. Welcome Rebekah Lodge (Nelson). —Sister D. Reeves, N.G., presided over a large attendance. An official visit was received from the Grand Warden (Bro. G. F. Rudkin, Wellington) accompanied by Sister M. Sergent, L.D.D.G.M., Wellington, and Bro. G. C. Gordon, G. L. representative, they being introduced by Bro. C. J. Brough. Two candidates were initiated. Gratification regarding the visit of the Grand Warden and the L.D.D.G.M. of Wellington, was expressed on behalf of the lodge by Sister M. P. Freeman, the visitors suitably responding. The Grand Warden briefly traversed the development of the Rebekah Degree and the progress of the New Zealand jurisdiction-of the order. After concluding the meeting a mock wedding ceremony was staged by members of the lodge, supper taking the form of a wedding breakfast. Victoria Rebekah Lodge.—Sister P. Palmer, N.G., presided over a large attendance, including the L.D.D.G.M., Sister M. Sergent, and visitors from Rose of Wellington, Rahiri, and Esther Rebekah Lodges. The following officers were installed for the current term by the L.D.D.G.M. and staff: Sister P. Palmer, J.P.N.G.; Sister Duske, N.G.; Sister Gubbins, V.G.; Sister J. Robertson, secretary; Sister E. Maley, financial secretary; Sister W. Maley, treasurer; Sister A. McKinnon, sen., R.S.N.G.; Sister Mason, L.S.N.G.; Sister A. Robertson, R.S.V.G.; Sister McConchie, L.S.V.G.; Sister A. McKinnon, jun., Warden; Sister J. McKinnon, Conductor; Sister Pryor, Chaplain; Sister Mahoney, I.G; Sister Unsworth, 0.G.; Sister Gracie, musician. Sister McKinnon, sen. was presented with a P.N.G. collar, in recognition of services rendered. Arrangements were made for card and social evening. Initiation of six sisters and one brother was carried out during the evening. ORDER OF DRUIDS. Poneke Lodge.—A.D. Bro. Nicholson presided over a large attendance. Bards submitted their reports on tt>e progress of sick brethren they had visited and the relative sum or £12 6s was passed. The secretary reported that at a recent meeting of the executive consideration had been given to the position of three members, who, through financial stress had been unable to meet their contributions, and recommended that these brothers be kept good on the books of the order. In the meantime the recommendation was unaminously endorsed by the lodge. An interim report was submitted by the building committee which disclosed that great strides had been made in dealing with preliminary details. The scheme is now definitely launched and it is hoped that the hall would be completed in ample time to enable the lodge to celebrate its 50th anniversary in its own lodge room. , The secretary reported that a steady increase in membership is being maintained. Two further applications for membership were received. After disposing of formal business the meeting was closed and members enjoyed a closelycontested game of indoor bowls, in which a rink skipped by Bro. Clarke narrowly defeated a rink skipped by Bro. Lacey. MANCHESTER UNITY ODDFELLOWS. Loyal Petone Lodge (Moera Branch). —There was an excellent attendance, at the last meeting of the lodge, over which Sister Rushton, N.G. presided. Several members of Rose of the Valley and Petone Lodges were present and were accorded Lodge Honours. Bro. Foote extended an invitation to members who wished to make the trip to Master ton. where a cricket match between Petone and Masterton lodges would take place. Bro. Rushton referred to the poor support given the Petone Lodge Cricket Club and pressed members to afford more interest. At the close of the meeting visitors were entertained at a social evening. MANIA FOR MOTORS «, Accused at, London Sessions of stealing two motor-cars and obtaining another car by false pretences, a young Scotsman stated he had been under medical treatment because of his passion for motor-cars. He was James Boyle, aged 31, a native of Edinburgh. He pleaded guilty and asked for four other cases to be taken into consideration. . DetectiveSergeant T. Grant stated that Boyle's parents wanted him to study for the medical profession, but he was interested in motor-cars, and refused to do so. He ran away from home, and later became a chauffeur.

Boyle declared he was not possessed of the will-power to resist temptations.
