THE FILMS
(To the Editor.)
j Sir, —The Censor's recent observations on some difficulties incidental to his work do not cover any new ground, and it is strange that he apparently does not mention the.powerful religious influence which was mainly responsible for the marked improvement which he now notices in the films. Much more might have been said by "Observer" on this phase of the matter, particularly the stampede by the producers to tone down (and in some cases withdraw) many of the more daring pictures they were making at the time. The box office angle of the Him business is the paramount consideration with the producer, and when the standards that hold society together were being ridiculed and burlesqued, the Church raised her voice in protest to some purpose. There is not the slightest doubt that the pressure brought to bear was entirely responsible for the improvement. Nothing else would have done it.—l am, etc., ■
