HALF NOTE WINS AGAIN
| The places in the Linwood Handicap were filled by horses who came from well back in the field. The winner was Half Note, who also succeeded on the course last Grand National Day, and it was a meritorious performance, as the mare was not sighted till they reached the straight, but then put in a brilliant burst along the outside of the field that got her up for a head victory over Maroha, with Riptide finishing on two lengths away to beat ,Top Rank and Invoice for the other I placing. Hall. Note is a five-year-old brown mare by Paper Money from the Tractor I mare Pink Terrace, a half-sister to Pink Note and a winner of the Oaks, and she carries the colours of her trainer. ID.. J. McDonald, of Wingatui, who found. Riccarton also a profitable course a season or two back with the new defunct Mobile. Being also by Paper Money, Half Note is very closely | related to Pink Note, one of the best ,of the many good horses got by the ! Greenback horse. Since racing at 'Naitional time Half Note had made only a single appearance prior to Saturday, an unplaced outing at Wingatui. Maroha very nearly made the result a big surprise, for he raced past Invoice to a clear lead at .the distance, but he just failed to hold on to .his [advantage. Even as it was he paid double figures for his placing. ! Riptide was another to come home well, finishing from further back than either of the pair who beat him. Top Rank was sixth or seventh in the middle stages arid just got up to take the barren honour off Invoice. Invoice came through the leaders brilliantly just after the field entered the straight and took charge below the false rail, but he could not then go on with it. The best of the others were Going Gay, who finished on in pleasing style from the back, Grand Review, Princess Rawene (always well up), and Miracle. The leaders over the early stages, Cheap Money and Concert Pitch, both dropped out, and so did Joyous and Madam Pompadour, others prominent at stages. , • • • There was a mishap early in the race, when Merry Del VaJ, who had played up before leaving the enclosure, fell. Her rider, J. McFarlane, suffered concussion. Among the horses interfered with was the well-backed Land Raid. An inquiry was opened afterwards and adjourned.
