CHIDDEN'S EASY WIN
LOWENBERG FINISHES ON
Chidden, who resumed racing only a fortnight ago, was a decisive winner of the Spring Plate, run at special weights, fcr though there was only a length and a half in her favour at the post she was then being eased up. Not conspicuous in the early running she went up fast at the half-way mark to be almost on terms with Alma and Beau Gallante as they entered the straight, and she then came right away to score very easily.
The win added to the successes of the older division in this event. Chidden is a four-year-old full-sister to the New Zealand Cup winner Chide and t^ Riri, and early last season her breeder-owner, Mr. G. Murray-Aynsley, had classic hopes with her, but she did not strike form till it was too late. She was a winner over nine furlongs at the C.J.C. Easter Meeting at her final start last term, and on resuming recently after a spell she finished third at Rangiora, an effort that evidently was all she required to 'fit her for Saturday's task. She is clearly a muchimproved mare who may go on to earn distinction in good class this term. Mr. Murray-Aynsley's horses are now being trained by H. R. Davies, formerly his head lad when he did his own training.
Lowenberg came home with the same stout run he produced at Trentham for second place, but his rider made the move too late. On this showing the colt will do well this season over longer distances. Valarth, within range of the front all the way and fourth into the straight, failed to run on as expected, though he got up to take third money off Alma, but a length behind Lowenberg, who was finishing much more resolutely. Alma was early in the lead, and though she could not withstand her challengers she hung on fairly well. There was a long gap to the others, who were headed by Kotou, Mount Val, and Gold Cross. Beau Gallante tired at the end of six furlongs and was the last to complete. McHeath was never a possibility.
