SURF LIFE-SAVING
BY REEL AND BOAT
MARANUI CLUB OPENS
Bright sunshine and a heavy surf made conditions almost ideal for the official opening on' Saturday of the season of the Maranui. Surf and LifeSaving Club. An exceptionally large number of friends and supporters, and also of members of other clubs, was present at the clubhouse, Lyall Bay.
The opening ceremony was performed by Mr. R. Semple, a vicepresident of the club, who was introduced by Mr. T. Queree, the president; Mr. Semple congratulated the club on the large number of members and supporters present. The life-saving clubs; he said, were carrying on a fine tradition of service. It might sometimes appear to the members of the clubs that they were not .appreciated, but he could assure them that they had the respect of the community. He had much admiration for men who knew the business of saving life from A to Z, and had the physique and'courage to carry their knowledge into practice.
In conclusion, Mr. Semple heartily congratulated the junior team, on its vey meritorious national victory, and expressed the hope that in the coming season the club would even more than equal its record of the past season.
A combined exhibition run-out by two reel teams of 6 men and a captain and a surf life-boat crew was then carried out. The three.teams took the water together in a race for the patients through the heavy surf. A particularly fine performance was put up by the junior team, with, H. C. Downs in the bell. '
The teams were as follows;—
Junior: R. Hawken (support), H. Downs (belt), J. Gray (Ist line), J. Phythian (reel), C. R. Durrant (2nd line), P. Aldous (3rd line), K. F. Hoy (captain).
Senior: E. Raven (support), R. H. Durrant (belt), T. Hewitt (Ist line), A. Lee (reel), L. Wiren (2nd line), H. Baird (3rd line), J. Whisker (captain).
Boat Crew: F. Kilduff, S. Guppy, H. Hawken, D. Evans, C. Mentiplay (sweep). .
A surf race was also held. Afternoon tea was served in the clubhouse by the ladies' committee.
