WEEKEND PLAY
MIEAMAE CHAMPION-
SHIP
JEFFERY. BEATS BLACK
A feature of the weekend golfing programme in Wellington was the unexpected defeat of H. A. Black by X. V. Jeffery in the final of the Miramar Club's championship by 3 and 2.
Black, who was 3 up at the end of the morning round, took the nineteenth, but Jeffery suddenly found form and squared the game at the twenty-sixth. Black took the twentyeighth to stand 1 up, but Jeffery won the next 4 to 5 to square the game. At the short thirtieth Jeffery drew 1 up with a 3 to 4. They halved the next in bogey 4's, but Jeffery took the thirty-second with a splendid tee-shot that found the green. Black had a great chance of getting one back at the thirty-third, but missed a two and a half foot putt for a win, and a half in 5 was recorded. Jeffery hit a splendid drive oft the thirty-fourth, tee, but Black pulled his into the rough. Black was short with his second, and the game was all over when Jeffery played a beautiful second to within five feet of the pin and sank the putt for a win in a birdie_3 to 4, which gave him.the championship by 3 and 2. Both had played splendid golf, and Jeffery's was a remarkable performance, for Black is an experienced player, and to stand 3 down at the end of the morning round and then be able to win 3 and 2.requires steadiness combined with brilliance. Jeffery took 36 lor the run out to Black's 41, and was one under 4's for the seven holes played on the return journey.
