NAVY LEAGUE
ADDRESSES TO SCHOOLS
The aims and objects of the Navy League, and the present position o£ the British Mercantile Marine, formed the subjects of addresses given by Mr. R. Darroch, secretary of the Wellington Navy League, during, a recent visit to the Wairarapa district, when he spoke at St. Matthew's College, Hadlow Preparatory School, Wairarapa High School, Solway Girls' College, Masterton Technical.College, and Matahiwi and Longbush Public Schools.
He emphasised that the Navy League, as it has done since its foundation forty-one years ago, is still advocating a strong enough navy to protect the British Empire and its 85,000 miles of trade routes and to make its voice effective in the councils of the League of Nations.
Mr. Darroch also deplored the fall in tonnage of the British Mercantile Marine and mentioned that since 1914, whilst the world's tonnage had increased by 18,831,000 tons, the British tonnage had fallen by 556,000 tons. The United States tonnage had risen from 2,970,000 tons in 1914 to 10,693,000 in 1933 and the Japanese tonnage from 1,708,000 tons to 4,258,000 tons. Mr. Darroch exhibited a clip of posters illustrating British shipping companies, steamship lines, and urged the pupils of the schools to support their own lines when in. years tp come they set out on their travels. He asked them to examine the debt owed to British enterprise in founding these lines of steamships, which-had played an important part in the development of Canada, South Africa. Australia India, and New Zealand. Mr. Darroch made a special appeal to people to support their own industries and thereby assist men on the unemployed list to get back to permanent work on full pay and thus give them the purchasing power to buy primary and secondary goods from New Zealand, from the Mother Country- and from the overseas Dominions. Mr. Darroch made special visits to Matahiwi School, nine miles from Masterton, and to Longbush School, eighteen miles from Masterton, after school hours, so keen were the schools to have the usual annual address. - Matahiwi and Hadlow Schools have now completed seven years' consecutive 100 per cent, membership of the Navy League.
On his visits, Mr. Darroch was accompanied by the president, secretary and members of the committee of thf> Masterton Navy League.
