STEVEDORES' STRIKE

TROUBLE AT ST. LUCIA

TROOPS CALLED OUT

CASTRIES (St. Lucia), November 5.

For the second time in a fortnight, Sir Selwyn Grier, Governor of tha Windward Islands, has proclaimed a state of emergency in one of his colonies.

Following a stevedores' strike which began on Monday and continued through Tuesday, Sir Selwyn Grier announced that the colony was in a state of emergency and called out .the island's volunteer force for actual military service. There has been no sign of disturbance since.

More than 100 labourers struck on Monday for higher wages for unloading the collier Tasmania, but it 'was apparent that the Governor feared an outbreak of violence such as was witnessed at Kingstown (St. Vincent) last month. The streets were patrolled for more than 24 hours by extra armed police and a small detachment of marines from H.M.S. Challenger, which has been in port since Sunday.
