RAILWAY EXPANSION
BRITISH PROGRAMME
LEGISLATIVE POWERS
AWAITED
(British Official Wireless.) RUGBY,'November 5.
The big scheme of railway development works-extending over five years and costing some £30,000,000, for which a loan, to be guaranteed as to principal and interest by the Exchequer, will'be raised, has been agreed upon following prolonged negotiations between the Government and the four main line railway companies. The granting of necessary powers by Parliament is only awaited before this programme of expansion and reconstruction is put in hand. . :,
In addition to the reconstruction and enlarging of many important stations and goods yards, the building of rolling stock, and the laying of new branch and loop lines, the proposed works include an extension of automatic .train control, the installation of colouredlight signalling arid other safety precautions, and big schemes of electrifica.tion. The most notable of the latter is an extension of the electrical railway on the Southern system. When completed the electrical services from London, which already run to Brighton and Eastbourne, will extend to Portsmouth, to Arundel, and to Hastings. .
