BEFOBE FLEMINGTON

NEW ZEALAND SUCCESSES

(From "Vedette.")

SYDNEY, October 29.

New Zealanders are having a belter innings in Melbourne than they did in Sydney. At Moonce Valley on Saturday Martinborough and Gay Brunette won two of the two-year-old events, and K. Voitre and A. Reed rode a double apiece.

A. D. Webster did not forget to back his charge Martinborough in the second division of the St. Albans Handicap. A chestnut colt by Lord Quex Irom Piquant. Martinborough jumped to the front and went away to win by two and a half lengths. He ran within a quarter of a second of the track record for the . half-mile, and would ha\ c established fresh figures had he been really extended. During the previous fortnight Webster had won two small races with Perfect Idea, so had the foundation for a dash at Martinborough, who was still a liberal-priced third favourite. K. Voitre rode the winner of the first division, Heroic Chief, who, however, did not impress for speed so much as Martinborough. Garrio, ridden by Voitre, upset all calculations in the W. S. Cox- Plate. Hall Mark was a hot favourite, but Garrio fairly bulldogged him out of the race down the straight. Garrio hitherto was regarded as a doubtful stayer, but he ran out the 9} furlongs well. Feldspar finished very fast third to Garrio and Hall Mark, making up a 'good deal of leeway oVer the last two furlongs. Sporting Blood ran an excellent race to finish sixth, and Gay Sheik made the pace for Six furlongs Gay Brunette, ridden by N. Percival, who scored on Pal fresco in the Caulfield Cup, was solidly supported in the first division of the fillies' race, the St. Albans Handicap. Like Martinborough, she was soon in front, and led all the way, her backers not being at all uneasy. Her time was 49.'.sec or within a quarter of a second of that of Martinborough. Not such good fortune was the lot of Gay Blonde in the Dundonald Handicap. The New Zealand mare carried 9st, but A. Tinker did not get her smartly away, and she w.as beaten from the start. As she had galloped brilliantly on the track on the previous Tuesday her showing was rather a disappointment. Red Manfred was another unsuccessful New Zealander in this event. He showed up .rather well, and it is quite possible Webster will exploit him at Flemington, for by the time of the big meeting he should be cherry ripe.
