ILL-TIMED WATERING

USE OF FORK BETTER

Many amateurs start using the hose at the first appearance of warm, sunny weather. Just because the surface soil is dry they think it is necessary to apply water. If the surface is scratched away in such cases it wnl be found that the soil an inch or so down is quite moist and if instead of watering the fork were run through the ground lightly to keep the surface loose much more good would be done. In many cases the application of water through a hose does very distinct harm; the water being very cold gives a severe check to the young delicate growths from which they may not recover.

As far as possible every effort should be made to conserve moisture in the soil by keeping the surface loose, keeping weeds in check (they use,up the moisture if allowed to remain), and by mulching.

When watering really becomes necessary do the job thoroughly so that the water penetrates right down to the thirsty roots. Do not attempt to get over the whole garden at one time; do it in sections, completely saturate one section at a time and repeat the process on succeeding evenings until the whole garden has been done.
