A POPULAR GEOUP

BRITISH MUSIC SOCIETY

The, popularity of the song group of the British' Music Society and the interest taken in the study and appreciation of grand opera were evidenced by-'the large attendance and long and delightful programme at the last meet-, ing of the group held, in Miss Lorna Black's studio.- This proved to be the most successful evening of the present season. There was a. wide range in the choice of items which were all appreciated" to the. full, while some were repeated by request.

The programme was as follows— "Softly Awakes ,My Heart," from "Samson and Delilah" (Saint-Saens), Miss Christina Young; "Pastoral,", from "Rosalinda" (Veracini), Mrs. K. O. Thomson; "O mio Babbino caro," from "Gianni Schicchi" (Puccini), Miss Molly Atkinson; "O Luce di quest anima," from "Linda de ' Chamounix" (Donizetti), Miss Joyce Myers; "Verdant Meadows," from "Alcino" (Handel), Miss Anne Gilpin; "Deh vienni non tardar," from "The Marriage of Figaro" (Mozart), Miss Marjorie Bennie; "When All Was Young," from "Faust" (Gounod), and "Knowest Thou the Land?" from "Mignon" (Thomas), Miss Mavis Chamberlain; Mimi's song from "La Boheme" (Puccini), Miss Veronica Bell; "Vissi d'rte," from "Tosca" (Puccini), Miss Christina Ormiston'; "Where Have Vanished Those Hours?" from "The Marriage of Figaro" (Mozart), Miss Janet Stirling.

At the end of the operatic programme a few songs by Italian composers were sung and these also were very enjoyable. The singers were given every assistance by Mrs. K. O. Thomson, Misses Nora Gray, Lila Brady, and Mavis Crawford, the accompanists.

The December meeting will be devoted to works by Russian composers, and as several beautiful items have already been promised, another interesting evening is assured.
