HOME COUNTIES' SOCIETY

A large gathering of English people met at the Y.W.C.A. last night'at the first general meeting of the hewjyformed English Home Counties' Society. Mr. John E. Hunt presided.

It was resolved that the name of the society be the English Home Counties' ■Society, comprising the following counties:—Buckinghamshire, Berkshire/Oxfordshire, Bedfordshire, and Hertfordshire. It was also decided that to qualify for membership, a person must be a native or a descendant of natives of the aforementioned counties, or the wife or husband of one.

In bringing forward a motion concerning the objects of the society, the •chairman • said that it was hoped to. foster a spirit of friendship and sociability among natives and descendants of the associate counties resident in the Wellington Province of New Zealand, and to accord a welcome to visitors from the Home counties arriving in .Wellington. The motion-, was passed. f

The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr. John E. Hunt; vice-presidents, Messrs. S. Thompson and A. T. Peterkin; secretary-treasurer, Mr. ■' J. W. .Verity; committee, Messrs. H. Hayes, Wiikins, D. E. Bryant, F. Reynolds; social committee, Mesdames Bold, ■ Auld, Caley, Cowie, and .S. Thompson. .

It was-resolved that meetings were to be called by the committee when and where deemed necessary, and at least four gatherings were to be held ,each year, one of these to be held definitely on St. George's Day.

Mr. Hunt said 'that he had- been trying for five years to get the people of the Home counties together, and he felt great pleasure that at last the society had been launched and "that he had been elected president.

After . the meeting supper was served, and a social was held at which the members were able to meet one another, and discuss days in the "Old Country."
