FURTHER INQUIRY

MARRIAGE AND DIVORCE

The report of the committee on marriage and divorce, set up at the last General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church, was presented at last night's meeting of the Assembly at St. John's Church by the.Rev. J. A. Allan (Riccarton). .

The report stated that the- committee had been conscious of the-difficulty of the task assigned to it and of the need of gathering as full information as possible and' considering various points of view before venturing to formulate a policy for the' church A good deal of useful and important material had been gathered and fully discussed, and.certain lines of principle were becoming more or less clearly defined in the minds of the members of the committee. It had not'been easy to get access to all the information required. The massive report of the British Commission on Divorce ' and Matrimonial Causes (1912) was not available in Christchurch anil it had only been possible to consult it in the Parliamentary Library in Wellington on occasions.

It had not yet been possible to prepare a report which would do justice to the importance and complexity of tne subject, but such a report the committee hoped to be able to get in order for the next Assembly.

" Mr. Allan said that requests had been made that any who had important information to offer should communicate with the committee, but there had .been ,no response. He repeated the request, and on his motion the report was. adopted.
