WEIGHING GORILLAS » At last the London Zoo has managed to provide Mok and Moina, the gorillas with a reliable and satisfactory weigh-ing-machine that they cannot break One of the ropes in their home is attached to a machine capable of registering weight up to lOcwt. Whenever the apes .swing on this rope their weight is shown on a large dial placed ?m°^ c he overhead bars of the cag.-\ While the was being fitted the gorillas had to be shut up in their sleeping apartments, but they watched the operations with keen interest. As soon as the workmen had gone and they were released, they went to investigate. Mok was the first to test the new machine; he promptly grasped the rope and swung on it. Hearing'the click of,the indicator, he looked up and was apparently gratified to learn that his weight is 15st, for afterwards he continued to weigh himself at regular intervals. Then Moina had a swing. Since then she has glared at the dial and pulled viciously at the rope. This is not surprising, for she weighs over 17st. Mok is chivalrous enough to try to reach the offending indicator and put it out of action, but this move was expected, and care has been taken to put the machine well out jof reach. The weighing-machine.also gives some idea of the gorillas' strength, for when Moina simply sits by the rope and gives it a slight tug the indicator on the dial points to over lewt. The paper money now in circulation in Britain has a total value of over £408,000,000.
