HERE AND THERE

Kitchen Evening. A delightful "kitchen evening" was held recently at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Roland Hall, Kelburn, in honour of-Miss K. Tustin and Mr. D. Gibson. Games and competitions were held, prizewinners being Mrs. Harold Hindle, Mrs. Jim White, and Mr. H. E. Brooker. Musical items were rendered by Mr. Gordon Hall. Among those present were Mr. and Mrs. Len. J. Greenberg, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Hindle, Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Franklyn, Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Brooker, Mr. and Mrs. J. White, Mrs. H. M. Hall (Christchurch), Misses M. Kelly, J. Thompson, and K. Tustin, and Messrs. D. Gibson, J. Johnston, D. Hunter, and Gordon Hall. The guests of honour received many useful gifts, the parcels being opened after a dainty supper had been served. The expression of good wishes to Miss Tustin and Mr. Gibson and of thanks to the host and hostess brought a very enjoyable evening to a close. "Brymay" Social Club. A most enjoyable concert was given for members of the "Brymay" Social Club and their friends in the Social Hall on Monday evening. Those who contributed to the programme were:— Mrs. Burgess, Miss Davies, and Mr. Ross Williams (musical numbers), Mr. R. Middleton (ventriloquist), Miss D. Violich (elocutionary items), the pupils of Miss Oliver, Miss Chown, and Miss Webber (dancing and club swinging), Master Ray Hill (violin solo), and Scott's Orchestra (orchestral numbers). The accompanists were Miss Brady, Messrs. Keane, Bryce, Roache, and Dr. Mansell. Supper was served for the performers. Successful Nursing Team. In the recent corps competitions the "Osborne Cup" was won by the B cadet team of the St. Paul's Nursing Division. Eleven teams from the different Wellington divisions competed, the work consisting of both home nursing and first aid. The judges < vere Dr. Patterson, Dr. Palmer, and Dr. Bruce Rennie. The members of the successful team were Edna and Betty Davis, Nellie Wood, and Margaret McKechnie. Ninety-three per cent, was gained in first aid and 82 per cent, in home nursing. Homes for alt Tastes.' To escape from the petrol fumes and exhaust gases, from traffic blocks and bottle-necks in Mayfair and Kensington, Sir William and Lady Rothenstein. have decided to make their new home on the roof of London. High Point, their double flat in Highgate Village, where they have Sir Arthur and Lady Crosfield and Mr. and Mrs. Priestly as neighbours, was designed by a young Russian responsible for the modernistic penguin house at the Zoo. He is designing a new elephant house at Whipsnade. Mothers' Helpers. Mrs. Marshall Macdonald presided at a meeting of the Mothers' Helpers on Monday. The secretary, Miss Sutton, reported that a great many new applicants had received help lately, and read many grateful letters. It did not appear to be generally known, she stated, that. the secretary should be rung before 7.30 a.m. when help is required on the same day. It is intended to hold a jumble sale before the end of the month. "Five O'Clock" Party at Cabaret. A very cheerful "five o'clock" party was given on Monday at the Mayfair Cabaret by Miss Kathleen Haire for Miss Joyce Mac Gibbon, of Christchurch, whose marriage to Mr. Athol Millward will take place shortly. Miss Mac Gibbon left for Christchurch the same night. Bowls of spring flowers and soft shaded lights made the cabaret look particularly attractive. Miss Haire received her guests, wearing a smart frock of wine rose wool georgette and a small hat of beige trimmed with touches of wine colour. Mrs. Haire was in nigger brown lace and wore a hat to match. Miss Mac Gibbon wore a navy blue suit with a hat to match, and a blue and white spotted scarf. Card Tournament. There was a big attendance of card players last evening at the headquarters of the Kilbirnie, Lyall Bay, and Melrose Auxiliary Committee, W.R.S.A., 15 Bay Road, Kilbirnie, to take part in the weekly bridge and "500" tournament. The successful players were:—Bridge, Mrs. L. Gray and Mr. F. Dick; "500," Mrs. E. Thomson and Mr. R. Thomson. Mr. H. M. Harris, vice-president of the local auxiliary, stated that a social would be held at the headquarters next week for which a first-class programme comprising musical items, competitions, etc., had been arranged. It was stated also that the ladies' committee would hold a card afternoon at the headquarters shortly, the proceeds being in aid of a special benevolent fund which that committee is building up. Sale of Work Opened. Everything augurs well for the success of the sale of work opened this afternoon at the Cambridge Terrace Congregational Hall. The stallholders are:—Fancy and work, Mesdames Day, Mesdames Macara, Dutch, Silcox; sweets, Mrs. Aspland, Misses Presents and Davis; flowers, Mrs. Sutton and •Miss Gray; handkerchiefs, Mrs. Quinton; cakes, Mesdames Johnson, Conibear, Miller, and Reynolds; Sunday School, Misses Ashford, Leckie, Waddle, and L. Reynolds. The concert programme this evening will be presented by the pupils of Mrs, Halligan. A tea for business men and women is being provided at 6 o'clock.
