MEMORIAL SERVICE

LATE MR. F. H. BAKEWELL

An impressive memorial service to the late Mr. F. H. Bakewell was conducted at St. Paul's Pro-Cathedral Mulgrave Street, at 11.30 today by the Key. J. L. Ashley-Jones, of Wadestown who took the lesson from Ecclesiastes

In a brief address, Mr. Ashley-Jones mentioned the characteristics of Christ —reality, sincerity, simplicity, and thoughtfulness—characteristics which had impressed themselves on His disciples, securing their love and devotion. These were the characteristics of the late Mr. Bakewell, who was strongly opposed to shams, and whose sincerity and single-mindedness made him widely loved, and whose work and thought for others had left an impress on the community.

Mr. R. Parker, C.M.G., presided at the organ.

Mr. Ashley-Jones also officiated at the crematorium, the large attendance rhowing the esteem in which the late Mr. Bakewell was held in all sections of the community.

The pallbearers were Colonel A. Cowles (representing the R.S.A.), Messrs. C. Robertson, J. Howarth, and W. H. Olson (headmasters), A. N. Burns and E. S. Hylton (secretary to the Education Board). Amongst those present at the service beside the chief mourners, were representatives of every phase of educational activity, including members of the Education Board. Victoria University College Council, professorial board of Victoria University College, Education Department, the inspectorate of schools, teachers' organisations, and ex-pupils of Mr. Bakewell. Headmasters of Wellington schools . were represented amongst others by Messrs. W. Hickson (president of the Wellington Headmasters' Association), F. L. Combs, J. Edie, J. Hopkirk, and Colonel A. B. Charters. The New Zealand Educational Institute was represented by Mr. G. R. Ashbridge (secretary). There were also present the Deputy Mayor of Wellington, Mr. W. H. Bennett; Messrs. W. H. Field and P. Fraser, the Acting-Director of Education, Mr. W. S. La Trobe: Mr. A. T. Bothamley, 1.5.0.; Mr. W. W. Bird (late senior inspector of schools), Mr. H. A. Parkinson, Mr. N. R. Mackenzie, Mr. C. E. Crawford, accountant to the Education Department, and Mr. A. P. H. Benge, secretary; Mr. E. T. Norris, Registrar of the University of New Zealand; Mrs. L. C. Roskruge. Mrs. F. Bethune, Dr. Agnes Bennett, Miss L. Hall, Miss Turner, Miss Newton. Mr. and Mrs. Hirschberg, and Mr. and Mrs. Curtis.
