WOOL AND WAR.

In some quarters the opinion has been expressed that war results in a decided advance in wool prices, state Winchcombe, Carson and Co., Sydney. But this firm points out that war did not do so in 1914-15, when Australia only sold 1,220,000 bales in the year, and the greasy wool marketed only averaged 8 5-8 d per lb in Sydney. The South African war extended from late 1899 to 1902. Owing to a fear of an acute shortage in supplies of merino, due to the season, from about April, 1899, -wool prices commenced to rise, and their upward movement continued until December, but from January onwards they slumped. The reason for the slump was partially due to nervousness owing to the war, and also to the financial inability of many firms to carry stocks and continue buying at the higher costs. Greasy wool in Sydney averaged 11 5-8 din 1899-1900, 1900-1901 53d, 1901-1902 6Jd. The Russian-Japanese war occurred in 1904-1905. In 1904-5 greasy wool in Sydney overaged. BJd, and 1905-6 9d. It does not follow that past experience will prove a definite guide, but those are the facts. The tendency'is for hostilities to at least temporarily produce some monetary nervousness.
