LONDON, October 29,
The Cairo correspondent of "The | Times" says that there is increasing j uneasiness in political circles at what, is considered to be the unsatisfactory . relations with Britain, the recent increase in the British garrison, and the transference of the Mediterranean; Fleet's base to Alexandria. It is emphasised that the British hold, on Egypt has been much strengthened without the Egyptian . people being either directly or indirectly consulted. The Premier, J .Nessim Pasha, is severely criticised for j 1 agreeing to these measures, and also .: for making other decisions since lie 1 (assumed office without even consulting Uus Cabinet colleagues or public opinion. He is now definitely unpopular. Egyptians do not disapprove of the -streivgthejiing .of the British forces in EgypV, and are not inspired by unfriendly feelings towards Britain. On the contrary, the general sentiment is j strongly against the Italians and ready to support strong measures to restrain Signor Mussolini. What is resented is that Egypt should practically be not consulted end treated ostensibly as a | vassal State. Egyptians regarded the British protectorate as ended, and 1 therefore they are shocked to feel that' such substantial traces remain. The: immediate reaction is a strong demand j for a return to» parliamentary government as a corrective to Nessim Pasha's "irresponsible regime."
