MR. BOTHAMLEY'S ADDRESS

The Democrat candidate, for Otaki, Mr. R. W. Bothamley, addressed a meeting.of electors at' Ohariu Valley last night.

. In referring to the present artificial rate of exchange, Mr. Bothamley said that no matter what Messrs. Forbes and Coates might allege to the contrary, the' fact was that the unsound policy of .the Government brought into existence by pressure ,from certain sources had not only injured the good name of our Dominion in financial and other circles in Great Britain but had also imposed a grave injustice upon the great majority of the people. Theoretical tinkering with currency, said Mr. Bothamley, in defiance of advice from lifelong trained financial brains would never establish the foundation for sound economic progress and development.

Dangerous fallacies, stated Mr. Bothamley, would never restore true national stability or the good will of our. market in Great Britain. The question of exchange in Australia was on an entirely different basis to that of tW Dominion! hut .as N"ew 7.pAlaiirt-

was heading today, importing for instance large .quantities of structural steel that at one time came from Great Britain, it was only natural that the I country's exports to Great Britain in the future would show a decided shrinkage unless the primary producer recognised that the consumer in Great Britain could not thrive on oneway trade as a result of a 25 per cent, tariff on his goods that the pi-escnt | artificial rate of exchange was respon- j sible for. The chairman of the meeting was Mr. W. Horribin, and at the conclusion of his address Mr. Bothamley was accorded a hearty vote of thanks.
