TWO MEN CHARGED

MONEY AND GOODS STOLEN

Several charges of breaking and entering city shops and warehouses were preferred against Henry Robert Smith. a motor driver, aged 35, and Thomas Stuart Shiels Robertson, a decorator, aged 32, who appeared before Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court today. They pleaded guilty to all the charges, and were committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Robertson also pleaded guilty to a charge of breaking and, entering the shop of Max Heinmann in Courtenay Place on October 6, and stealing £2 and six pairs of socks valued at 9s. A charge against Smith of receiving the socks from Robertson, knowing them to have been dishonestly obtained, was adjourned sine die. The accused, who were represented by Messrs. J. A. Scott and W. G. Mellish respectively, were charged with breaking and entering the warehouse of Abbott, Armstrong, and Howie, in Victoria Street, on October 4 and stealing a cash-box containing £4 7s Id and a cheque for £3, and six pairs of ladies' gloves, the total value being £8 13s Id; breaking and entering the warehouse of the Manchester Manufacturing Company in Dixon Street on October 6, and stealing shirts and pyjamas valued at £5 10s 3d; breaking and entering the warehouse of Harry Phillip Levy in Dixon Street on October 6 and stealing ladies' coats and costumes valued at £20 2s; breaking and entering the counting-house of William Prentice Sommerville in Hill Street on October 9, and stealing the sum of 7s 2d, air-mail and postage stamps, and a quarter bottle of spirits, of a total value of £2 7s 8d; attemptImg to break and enter the shop of | John Glug Marshall on October 11 I with intent to commit theft; attempting I to break and enter the shop of George Fowlds in Manners Street on October 13 with intent to commit theft. Evidence was given by various people concerned, with the premises broken into by the two accused. They described how doors had been found open and windows broken, and also identified property which had been missing. Detective S. Browne gave evidence as to having interviewed the two accused, and produced statements in which they admitted the offences.
