ALSATIAN DOG BILL
DRASTIC AMENDMENTS
Drastic .amendments have been made by the Agricultural and Pastoral Committee of the Legislative Council to the Alsatian Dog Bill introduced by the Hon. C. J. Carrington (Auckland). The compulsory sterilisation provisions have been struck out, and the fee for registration has been reduced from £10 to £5. The sterilisation clause has been replaced by a clause which makes it an offence for anyone to keep an unregistered dog, and makes the owner liable to a fine of £50. The control of the dogs is still left to the local authorities, and the muzzling clause has been retained. The clause empowering a constable who witnesses an attack by. an Alsatian to destroy the dog has been retained. In addition to exempting military and police dogs the Committee also proposes that dogs useS as leaders for blind persons shall also be exempt from the provisions of the Bill. The Council adjourned consideration of the Bill after it had been committed yesterday afternoon.
