GYMNASTIC CARNIVAL
SUCCESSFUL CONCLUSION
The finale of the V.M.C.A. Gymnastic Club's 1935 carnival was performed in the Blue Triangle Hall on Saturday evening before a large audience of parents and friends. The work of the instructor, Mr. J., A- Duffy, was rewarded with the warm applause which greeted the various items. The display was a resume of the work done by the classes throughout the year, and covered all types of physical training. The programme opened with two dumbbell classes of boys, some of them very small, and all worked very energetically. A burlesque, entitled "Posties," was enacted by a- number of men dressed as postmen, Miss Joan Hobbs as a postmistres, and Mr. Duffy as an inspector of post offices. During this item, a simultaneous tap dance was given by E. Parlette and Jack Han-' nam, and the other men performed some very clever balancing feats on chairs and tables. Another item by the boys was "The Clown's Dream," in which a-team of five-boys-dressed ■in red clown ■ costumes ■ with ■ white ruffles went ■ through- a • strenuous series of tumbling exercises, assisted by two larger clowns who were very versatile in the way of tumbling, balancing, and vaulting. Another class of boys presented a .flag drill. The senior boys' triangles was aiso a very spectacular number.
~-In the girls' classes a party of gipsies in orange and red presented a very effective drill with hoops which were covered with red streamers, and a dainty tambourine dance was also given. The soloist,' Mr. Eric de Mauny, sang "Play to Me, Gipsy." Other principals in this number were Connie Collier and Warren Shaw.' Military cane drill and marching was also performed by the girls' class, the costumes being of smart military design in orange and cobalt blue, with blue pill-box hats and blaok and silver ■ canes. A class of black and-white pierettes presented an effective barbell display. The ladies' classes presented a rhythmic beach drill, performed with beach balls, and dressed in different-coloured bathing costumes, and also a deportment drill to music in the gymnasium uniform, white frocks :with: red triangles. A ladies' class wearing white jumpers and black velvet shorts-de-monstrated a series of "slimming fit" exercises, the movements of which were explained by Mr. Duffy. Another item was a rhythmic drill in which the ladies wore dainty frocks of pink and green. The secqnd half of this item was very effective, being done with shining rods. Members of the men's class cleverly demonstrated balancing, horizontal and parallel bar work, showing the rhythm of-the human form.
- The programme, closed with a Hungarian . folk dance performed by the ladies', class in. white organdie frocks with multi-coloured streamers on the black bodice and headgear. Throughout the evening the two clowns, Les Warner and Joe Collins, kept appearing with humorous remarks and clever acts. Mrs. Duffy, who had provided the music, was presented with a bouquet, of tulips and a box of chocolate?. .
