FOR SMITH FAMILY
WURIEL BRUNSKILL SINGS
To help the Smith Family's Christmas Cheer fund, Madame Muriel Brunskill, the celebrated English contralto, sang before an almost full house in the De Luxe Theatre last night. It was her final appearance in Wellington. She was assisted in the concert by Mr. Carl Bartling, the brilliant pianist who has been associated with her on the tour of New Zealand, and by Miss Ins Mason at the Wurlitzer organ. All three artists received rounds of applause, the audience showing especial appreciation of Madame Brunskill's numbers. At the end of the performances Mr. C. A. L. Treadwell thanked the artists on behalf of the Smith Family and the audience, mentioning that though the Family had had the assistance of many visiting artists, it had rarely been honoured by the help of so celebrated a singer as Madame Brunskill. He presented her with a tiki brooch.
The programme was as follows: — By Madame Brunskill: "Fair House of Joy" (Roger Quilter); "From the Tomb of an Unknown Woman" (Bantock); "A Feast of Lanterns" (Bantock); "The Love of the Archer Prince" (Felix White), "I Know a Bank" (Julius Harrison), "Where Coral Lie" (Elgar); "Sabbath Morning at Sea" (Elgar); "A Legend" (Tschaikowsky); "None but the Weary Heart" (Tschaikowsky); "To the Forest" (Tschaikowsky); "Gopak" XMoussorgsky); "Lilacs" (Rachmaninov); "Spring Waters" (Raehmaninov).
By Mr. Carl Bartling: "Waltz in C Sharp Minor" (Chopin); "Butterfly" (Lavallee); "Humoresque" (Rachmaninov).
For encore numbers Madame Brunskill sang Handel's "Largo" and "Love Went a-Riding," and Mr. Bartling played "The Shadow Dance" by MacDowell.
