NELSON NEWS

(Special to the "Evening Post.")

NELSON, October 19. Strong representations have been made to the Government recently for the commencement of work on the Reefton end of the Lewis Pass Road and the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. J. Bitchener) has now advised Mr. K. J. Holyoake, M.P., that a roadmaking camp will be established at the Reefton end almost immediately. At the present time 250 men are employed on the Canterbury end of the road, and the decision to commence construction at the Reefton end will considerably expedite the work.

The Nelson, Moutere Hills, Motueka, and Riwaka districts at present resemble a huge garden with hundreds of acres of fruit trees in full bloom. The weather conditions for the blossoming period have been perfect, and already there is evidence of a heavysetting of stone fruit. The general rule throughout the district is a profuse blossoming of apples and pears and given a favourable season and reasonable freedom from pests and diseases the pip fruit crop should be as large, if not larger, than the record one of the 1933-34 season, when over 1,000.000 cases of fruit were exported from the province.
