REPLIES TO CIRCULAR
It was announced today, in response to an inquiry, that, in round figures, about 500 relief workers in Wellington have replied to. the Unemployment Board's circular agreeing to accept full-time, work at standard rates in connection with the new programme of proposed public works.; In Auckland "the number is stated to be over 1000. There the first section of the programme calls for' about'soo men, so that there should be little difficulty in staffing' the jobs^ '■• :-':• Many Wellington relief workers are on sustenance .and 'are unfit for the class of work they would-be called upon to do under the Public Works schemes. ■ -;
The only job of magnitude within reasonable distance of the city at the present time is the construction of the new bridge at Paremata,- but. work there has hardly got beyond the preliminaries stages. A "Post" reporter was informed that men had not been detailed for tmV job'and that as yet it was not known how many- would be required.
Although there is not much doing in.the bigger, class of jobs in the vicinity of Wellington just now,"there are a number of proposals in view No details were available today, however of specific jobs for the absorption of the Wellington men. -
