UPPER HUTT CLUB
SILVER JUBILEE
This is the silver jubilee year of the Upper Hutt fowling Club, and special mention of the fact was made at the opening ceremony on Saturday afternoon. ' ' The president (Mr. "A, G. Mumby) said that because this was the jubilee year everything had been made spick and span for the opening. ' The pavilion had been repainted and the greens were in good order. The membership had been increased from 25 two years ago to over 40. It was hoped that it would be 50 before the year .was out. Mr. Mumby apologised for the absence of Mr. W. Gilbert, president of the Wellington Centre. He referred to the death of Mr. James Greenwood, which had occurred recently, Mr. Greenwood having, been a prominent member of the club since its inception. Mr. Mumby expressed appreciation of the large attendance and • welcomed the visitors. He thanked the greens committee and the caretaker for the work they had done on trie green. He was pleased to see present Mr. W. E. Pawson, president of. the Hutt Valley Centre, who had attended the opening function for the past 17 years. Mr. Mumby thanked the three sections of I the club for organising a queen carnival and thus helping to put the finances on a better footing. Mr. Pawsori, who performed the opening ceremony, congratulated the club on its increased membership and its very fine assets. For. their size the tennis courts had few equals in New Zealand, and the bowling greens looked very nice. -. He always appreciated his visit to the opening ceremony of the club. He. noticed that the croquet, section was short of members. The bowlers should encourage their wives to play croquet, for the two games fitted in so well. He wished the club a successful season.

Mr. Mumby also performed the opening ceremony of the tennis section of the club, hitting thefirst ball over the net. '.: ■'-.-'
Miss Gardner was welcomed from the Wellington Cronuet Centre and she officially opened the club's croquet season by putting a ball through the first hoop. ■ ■
