THEFT FROM SHOP DOOR
An . attempt by George Henry O'Brien, aged 52, a labourer, to make off with a bolt of blue cloth from a shop doorway in Manners Street yesterday . afternoon brought him to the dock of the Magistrate's Court today, where Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M,, sentenced him to one month's imprisonment with hard labour on a charge of .stealing the cloth, which was valued at £\ 19s, and belonged to Wolfe Black. v Sub-Inspector C. E. Roach said that shortly after 3 p.m. yesterday the accused took the cloth, and, covering it with his coat, want off down the street. He was seen by a bystander and pursued by the manager of the shop. He Showed.fight to the manager, who was assisted by two young men, and, still talking fight and using bad language, he was held until the arrival of Constable Waite. He was a man on sustenance, and was an old thief with numerous previous convictions, although he had not been before the Court for theft since 1925.
O'Brien pleaded guilty, but hadnothing to say, except that he was under the influence of liquor at the time, ■
