TREND OF MUSIC

ADDRESS TO TEACHERS

The annual general meeting of the Music Teachers' Association was held recently in the Pioneer Club rooms, 30 members attending. Mr Gordon Short was re-elected president, Miss Corliss and Miss Clere vice-presidents, and Messrs. Watkins, Temple White, Hamilton Dickson, and Misses Hobbs, Hiscock, and Watkins were appointed to the council. Mr. R H Webb was reappointed non. solicitor; and Mr. F. H. Kember was appointed hon. auditor in place of Mr. J H. Jack, who retires after many years'- service. A vote of thanks was passed in his favour. During the evening ' Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton Dickson played a sonata for piano and violoncello by Boellmann. Mrs. Anna Ginn was welcomed from her visit to Europe. She gave an entertaining account of her experiences, and spoke about trends of musical performance. She said they were m three directions—great recitals to huge audiences by world-famous performers; more or less private ' gatherings, for the performance and study of music in a more intimate way; and the microphone method of the broadcasting organisations. With the first she included choral works such as "Elijah and "Hiawatha," given nightly for a week or more, with full effects of scenery and costume, and received by huge audiences with indescribable enthusiasm. She found the desire for personal performance, the cult of domestic music, particularly noticeable, while the 8.8.C. organisation held a prominent place, so that teachers of microphone technique were to be found in numbers.
