WELLINGTON RACES

THE WINTER MEETING

FIRST DAY AT. TRENTHAM

IMPROVED WEATHER

(By "Rangatira.")

. The weather broke much improved this morning for the opening day of the Wellington Racing Club's Winter Meeting at Trentham, and with the sun bursting through the light clouds during the forenoon there was promise when xhe racing began of pleasant i winter conditions overhead for the , afternoon. The ground was naturally 'very damp underfoot after the rain of the two previous days, but otherwise the meeting was opened under much more favourable auspices than had . seemed likely yesterday. The track' was heavy, but it has often been much worse, at Trentham in the winter. ■ There was early a good attendance of the public, and as usual it improved during the course of the first two events. The betting was under the win-and-place system, and a running description of the racing was broadcast for the convenience of patrons. ■ ■ Results and comment on the running up till time of going to press are:—. MARIRI HACK AND HUNTERSSTEEPLECHASE HANDICAP, £200; second horse £40. and third • £20 from the stake; about 2J miles. i!_l—T. Newman's eh g Diamond, by Diacquenod—Lady Desmond, syrs, 10.8 (F. Thompson) 1 7_7_Miss M. C. Wilson's b g Monastic, by Pombal— Cowl, 6yrs, 9.9 (R. Drinkwater) .... 2 4. 4-R, D. McKelvie's b g Cardhu, by Danilof—Sweet Flower, aged, 9.4 (J. Mcßae) 3 Also started: 6-8. Cotsfield 10.9 (J. Walsh), 9-10 Invictus 10.2 (C. Thomson), 1-2 Reminder 9.10 (J. Richards), 3-3 Anemometer 9.9 (E. Deslandes), 8-6 Sir Musk 9.9 (B. Sullivan), 10-9 Petrarch 9.6 (A. McDonald), 11-11 High Speed 9.0 (H. Turner), 5-5 Taura Lad 9.0 (A. Jenkins). Diamond led all the way to win the Mariri Hack and Hunters1 Steeplechase without at any stage looking in any danger.' His jumping was near faultless. High Speed, Petrarch, Monastic, and Cardhu were in the following lot over the first round, but Petrarch and Cotsfield tired on the final circuit and High Speed finally lost his position through bad jumping. Monastic and Cardhu, with Anemometer moving up from near the back, were .the' only serious place prospects at the last fence, Monastic gaining second four lengths behind the winner, with Cardhu five lengths away, nearly handing over third money to Anemometer, who finished very fast. Cotsfiel dand High Speed were next. Reminder fell at the fourth fence,.and Sir Musk lost his rider at the fifth fence. Time, smm (Winner trained by T. R. George, Trentham.) WOBURN HANDICAP, £200; second ' horse £40 and third £20 from the stake; o furlongs. ' ' t ll_il_C. G. Ancell's eh h Collision, by Colossus —Arbroath, syrs, 7.13 (P. Atkins) ••■• 1 6—6—P. F. Pine), 17-17 Windward 7.9 (J.- Leach), 20-19 Blue Tiger 7.7 (W. J. Broughton), 19-21 Thane 7.7 (R. Marsh). The favourites all failed in the Woburn Hack Handicap, and four big dividends were returned to the lucky backers of the placed horses, Collision paying over a quarter of a century, on the straight-out machine. In such a biff field it was difficult to observe what happened at the start, but Grand Score and Windward seemed to be the early leaders from Wahine Nui, Linguist, and Collision. On reaching the course proper Grand Score and Windward had charge from Collision, Colombo, Linguist, and Mount Val, and with' the first pair weakening at the distance Collision raced to the lead and withstood a hard challenge from Colombo by a short head. Two and a half lengths away Mount Val got up to cut Windward out of third money. Full Throttle was fifth, with Grand Score, Solaria, McHeath, Wahine Nui, and Linguist next. A Dollar Bill and .Rona Bay fell crossing to the straight but their riders were not hurt. Time, lmin 17 3-ssec. (Winner trained by J. Olsen, Hastings.) Hunting Jay, having only his second race over the fences, raced to the lead past Kia Tina, Imasurvey, and Lord Argosy between the first two obstacles and there he remained. Along the back Imasurvey, Salt Spray, Lord Argosy, Prince Val, and Swift and Sure followed him, and on the home turn Salt Spray went to second place with Swift and Sure and Adult moving up. Once over the last fence Hunting Jay had no serious challenger to ward off, and went on to score by two lengths from Swift and Sure, who beat Salt Spray by three lengths, with Adult only a little over a length back fourth. There was then a big interval to Master Musk, Prince Val, and Imasurvey. Kia Tina hit the fence at the seventh furlong and was pulled • up. Otherwise .there were no mishaps. Time, 3min 4£sec. (Winner "trained by L. Knapp, Awapuni.). STEWARDS' HANDICAP, £250; second horse £50 and third £25 from the stake; 6 furlongs. I—l—A.1 —I—A. Winder's b g Prince Acre,

Having his first start in open company, the Te Rapa horse Prince. Acre was a somewhat surprising favourite in ,the Stewards' Handicap, but he proved well capable of beating this j good field of sprinters. He was in F behind the leaders in the early stages and when they reached the straight : Astarth was'well clear with. Good 2 Hunting, Rebel Chief, and Slippery still 3 to pass, .but he then came through , strongly and with Astarth stopping at ' the distance, he' took charge and won decisively by a couple of lengths. Astarth was an easy second, three lengths ahead of Hunting Lodge, who was finishing on well, and Merry Peel was also running a good fourth. The nearest of the others were Good Hunting, Royal Bengal,' Tybalt, -anti Orapai. Rebel Chief and Acceptable were last to finish. Time, .lmin 18£ sec. (Winner trained by owner, Hamilton.) WELLINGTON STEEPLECHASE HANDICAP, £600; . second horse v £120, and third . £60 from the stake; about 3} miles. • 3_2—G. Campbell's br g Valpeen, by Valkyrian—Unknown, 7yrs, 11.4 (W. J. Burgess), 9-10 Pahu 9.3 (M. H. Nicol), 5-5 London 9.2.(Fergus), 8-8 Dozie 9.0 (J. Walsh). The Wellington Steeplechase/ was a great race among Valpeen, Ruby Meteor, and Durimure, and superior stamina finally gained the day for the topweight by a length from Ruby Meteor, who beat Dunmure by only half a length. The three were racing in close order for the last seven furlongs, and had Dunmure not nearly fallen at the sod, wall, after which his jumping was always risky, he might have been the victor. Riotous dropped his rider after going a round, Haakon broke down at : the next fence,. Tudor slipped and fell on the flat going out of the straight the final time, and Royal Limond and Dozie were pulled up. Pahu and London also completed.
