REAR LIGHTS ON CYCLES

OFFICIAL ACTION URGED

The Lower Hutt Borough Council had before it last evening a report from Inspector J. Fletcher on the lines of an interview which he gave recently to a "Por»t" representative. The report stated that, so'far as Lower Hutt was concerned, the complaints about unlighted cycles were greatly exaggerated. Mi\ Fletcher considered, however, that rear lights on cycles were a necessity and that the urgency of the matter demanded Government action. ' A letter was received from Mr. Milne, of the Cyclists' Touring Club, stating that a rear reflector was all that was necessary and that the unreasonable speeds of motorists were respon-i sible for any danger to cyclists. On the motion of the Mayor (Mr. J. W. Andrews), the question was referred to the executive of the Municipal Association. Councillor W. B. Rainey remarked that the question of rear lights was entirely one for the Government. He also caused some laughter when he mentioned that a motorist who nad been urging on him the necessity of prosecuting riders of unlighted cycles was the first motorist to be "caught speeding on the evening when the "inspectors were out to catch erring cyclists.
