NO FRENCH SUPPORT?

AGREEMENT WITH ITALY

("Times" Cable:-! LONDON, July 4. The Paris correspondent of "The Times" says that British efforts to secure French support for the defence of the League Covenant against the menace of war by one League member against another one are unlikely to meet with encouragement. M. Laval recently concluded an agreement with Italy enabling the Franco-Italian general staffs to decide on a diminution ot-the garrison on the Franco-Italian frontier. It! is not clear whether this : : justifies Italy counting on a free hand 'in Abyssinia.

The Franco-Italian Pact which was signed at Home in January settled three problems existing between the two countries concerning their African colonies. Although Italy's claims in Southern Libya were not admitted in full, Italy obtained from French West Africa and French Equatorial Africa an area 800 miles by 100 miles near the Tibesti region, including one or two important wells. In French Somaliland Italy obtained a strip, of coastline facing Bab-el-Mandeb, but not including the port of Obok, and sovereignty over the island of Doumetrah. Boundary commissions were to draw up normal frontier agreements of good neighbourhood. Italy also obtained the facility of acquiring 2000 shares in the Addis-Ababa-Jubuti railway which provides Abyssinia with a trade outlet to the Eed Sea. Italian residents of Tunis retain their neutrality for two generations.
