MOTOR TAXATION

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—Has "Safety First" considered that the owner of a large car pays' at least twice as much in petrol tax (8d per gallon) as the owner of a small car? New Zealand motorists are already paying £2,000,000 in taxes, which amounts to 10 per cent, of the total taxation. If "Safety First" wants to burden himself and other motorists with an additional tax of from £7 to £23 per year .he will certainly, be unpopular. As it is, motorists, pay over 55 per cent, in taxes on all cars and car parts imported into New Zealand, and a 40 per cent, tire tax falls heavily on high-speed cars.—l am, etc., MOTORIST.
