JEWELLERY THEFT
SUSPECTS OF RECEIVING
VAGRANCY CHARGE
(Received June 25, 1.30 p;m.) SYDNEY, This Day. < Matthew Walsh, aged 23, and Keith Gill, aged 21, appeared in the: city Police Court on a charge of vagrancy. The police prosecutor ■ said that-the caretaker of a jewellery firm in Western Australia was murdered and jewel' lery valued at £4927 stolen. The police had satisfactory proof that Walsh and Gill had been receiving jewellery. , ■ The Magistrate granted the police application for a remand. • The body of Edgar Whitfield, aged about 60, night caretaker employed by Caris Brothers,'jewellers, Hay Street. Perth, was found during- the night of ' February 5 at the rear of the shop with a broken neck, and diamonds , valued at £4000 or £5000 were missing from the safe. Whitfield; was seen.the previous night at about 10 o'clock transferring diamonds from the window to the safe in accordance with his usual custom. Later the police received a telephone message from an unknown man saying that he had heard a crash of falling glass within the shop. Their examination revealed Whitfleld's body; There was evidence of theft, and. the1 police were of the opinion. that Whitfield's neck was broken during:* violent struggle with burglars. .
