CASH CLUB'S FIRST RACE
SIX COMPETITORS
The first of fortnightly professional roEid cycling races organised by the Wellington Cash Athletic and Cycling Club was held under ideal cycling conditions on Saturday, the distance being 20 miles, from the Wellington Fire Brigade to the V.1.C., Lower Hutt, and Considering that this was the first professional road cycling event in Wellington for at least thirty years, the entries were very good, and the handicapping was so well done that it was anybody's race to the finish. . The following are the results:—G. Staveley (2imin), lhr 2min 30sec, 1 (£4); S. Wright (3Jmin), lhr 2min 45 sec, 2 (30s); L. G. Lukey (scr), lhr 29 mm, 3 (15s). The fastest times were:— L. G. Lukey, lhr 2min 29sec (30s), and G. Staveley, lhr 2min 30sec (15s). J. Comyanini. the, limit man, led all the way, but while on his return journey developed cramp, and had to withdraw. Staveley caught Wright after passing Lower Hutt, and from then on until just before finishing both riders held together, making a most exciting finish, which the spectators thoroughly enjoyed. Lukey waa third, having gone the whole distance without a companion. Wyeth's handle-bars came oft near Petone on the homeward journey, and his fall badly injured his knees. However, he repaired the cycle and continued the race, finishing fourth.
W. J. Seclen, Palmerston North, rode well on the outward journey, but on his return took the wrong turning at Lower Hutt, otherwise he would have been in the platings.
